Sinkane – Mars

December 7, 2012

SInkane is the musical guise of Sudanese New Yorker Ahmad Gallad. Gallad is known in muso circles as an excellent live player, and has joined the touring band of both Of Montreal and Caribou. On Mars, his debut album, he steps into the spotlight, singing, and playing at least 4 of the instruments on each track. The album is steeped in the afro pop rhythms of his childhood, blurred with fat backed 70s funk, indie sensibilities, and Gallad’s hazy, laidback vocals. The end result is – for want of a better word – cool.

There’s an ease running through Mars; the songs lolloping along, all loose limbed jams and killer basslines, as effortless as sunshine. There are occasional detours into Blaxploitation era jazz, particularly on the stoned swirl of the title track, but Gallad steers clear of self indulgence and at round half an hour long, the album leaves you desperate for more. It’s come late in the day, but this may be a last minute contender for one of the albums of the year. 9/10
