Let’s go back in time and make our own clothes. Our ancestors managed with less so it’s time we do it with more. I honestly couldn’t believe that it’s cheaper to buy material and make an outfit over buying it in a shop. You have more options and can make changes where you want.
I have sewed since I was 5. I have the scar to prove it. No joke, I actually stood on a needle when I was 5. Anyway, I was never good at it by hand and still am bad. However, machine? That’s a different story. There’s something so therapeutic about the sound of the machine and wearing your designs.
Okay, mine are not perfect yet. I suck at doing the sleeves. That’s what I’m the worst at. Also, I don’t have a mannequin so sometimes designs can go a bit wrong but the beauty of creation is that you can adapt to the situation.
Yesterday I made a bandeau crop top, sadly, it wasn’t as stretchy of a material as I thought so I have to adapt.
Today, I’m going to cut into the back or front, I haven’t decided yet and make it a lace back design so the material doesn’t go to waste.
I recently discovered a business near me called Fabriques, they refuse to contribute to material waste in the world and they will sell off any bits they have or donate them to college or university courses for practice, I think that’s the most beautiful thing to do. I have so much admiration for thinking about sustainability.
Did you know fast fashion brands are responsible for the most waste world wide? I refuse to contribute to that and will only shop in certain stores.
Shop ethically. There’s a reason designers only release items every so often, they’re more conscious about the effect they have on the environment and so am I.
One thing I used to do with my designs when younger was to be adventurous and any spare material would be used as stuffing for a cushion.
Note: Must remember to keep spare pieces of fabric to stuff a cushion.
I think one of my favourite items to make are scarves. There’s something about crushed velvet and velour that adds class to an outfit. One think I’ve done or should I say not done, is sew the seems at the bottom together. It means that if your hands get cold, you can stick them inside to keep warm. Think smarter not harder!
