Stop normalising obvious emaciation! By Lola Louise

Hollywood is at it again. Celebrities are turning to bones and fans can’t help but say they look better than ever. It’s wrong and they are part of a growing problem.

Kids refusing to eat because they don’t look like the stars they idolise. That is scary, they don’t even realise how much influence they have over others and don’t take any accountability. Parents are having to try to ban photos from being seen by their kids so they don’t starve themselves.

As someone who didn’t eat through her childhood and was starving every day till the point my brain normalised it, it is not good. I used to be able to put my hands under my ribs, I never want to do that again. I want to be okay. I have recovered but I can always slip. It is not glamorous, it is not beautiful, it’s dangerous. Seeing some of the photos coming out, it makes me want to constantly eat until I’m full as I’m scared. I felt sick every time I ate or felt pressure, eyes staring at me when eating, it being too loud for me to concentrate on eating. It was mostly in school and college because I felt I had to be someone I wasn’t and was uncomfortable completely to do anything.

Once you stop eating enough, your body starts to eat away at everything inside to stop the hunger, everything breaks down and then bones start to protrude more. There’s naturally thin and then there’s purposefully doing that to yourself and denying you have any issues. “Don’t talk about my body” someone has to when you refuse to address the obvious problems and damage being done. Once you hit a certain point, your body can’t heal from the damage and you die.

Did nobody learn anything from Karen Carpenter? Her story was heartbreaking in the worst way possible. Why are we having history repeat instead of admitting to the problem?
Like genuinely, some fans have been vile and it makes me think “no wonder people don’t come forward” but for the sake of others who have been competing and following down the path of starving, it’s time to speak out. I spoke out. Nobody is going to judge for saying what we can see with our eyes, it feels better to say things out loud.

We seriously can’t normalise damage, we have to keep speaking for the sake of others.

You know that if something happens and said person dies, the subject will be “why didn’t anyone say anything?” There’s no winning. Concern, is not hate. It is human nature. Yes, there are people hating but that’s different from worry for wellbeing.

Can we just learn to be happy with our bodies?
