The filmmaking world lost a legend and one-of-a-kind talent in January with David Lynch passing away aged 78.

He was born on January 20th, 1946, in Montana, USA. He and his family moved around the USA, and he lived in places such as Idaho, Washington, North Carolina, and Virginia.
As a kid, he joined the Boy Scouts and rose up the ranks to become an Eagle Scout. He was present with the scouts at the inauguration of JFK. He had a keen interest in art, which he would express with his filmmaking style. He and a friend wanted to travel to Europe and had hopes to be trained by Oskar Kokoschka at his school but were unsuccessful. He would say his style was more of a European filmmaker rather than an American one, stating that the style was “Get down and thrill your soul.”

Lynch made his first short film, Six Men Getting Sick (Six Times), in 1967. It was an experimental animated film that he wrote, directed, and edited when he was a student at Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts. He would make a few short films before dropping out of the school and moving to Los Angeles to study at the AFI Conservatory, where he began working on what would be his debut feature film, Eraserhead, which was released in 1977.

Eraserhead went on to be a success, with Stanley Kubrick praising the film. His next two feature films, along with Eraserhead, are considered among the best films of all time. 1980s Elephant Man and 1984s Dune.

He is most known for his television series Twin Peaks, which ran from 1990 to 1991 with a return series in 2017 and a 1992 film. The show is a surrealistic horror mystery and is David Lynch’s most well-known work. It had a massive fan base around the world, and each year fans gather by the shooting location to see Kyle MacLachlan drive past the famous sign.
David Lynch was an influence on the world of film and TV and will be missed.
