Why song writing is therapy? All The Feels by me, Lola Louise

The first song I remember writing I was probably 6, I wasn’t great at it as I was a kid who didn’t have life experiences. I just tried to copy or talk about random stuff that didn’t make sense to anyone else.

The first memorable song I wrote was in Year 7 called: “Not Noticed” about feeling unwanted in the world, that’s the way I was made to feel at school. I still remember the lyrics. It was meant to be empowering as some of the lyrics were “I can’t let it bring me down.” It never did until it caught up with me years later. Someone ripped all my songs up that year which broke my heart. I never wrote again for years.

College Year 1 – I started watching Nashville and got inspired to write again. I was also in a very bad place so the words were naturally hitting hard. Some were about friendship, some were about trauma, it was a mixed book of words. When I finished the book I don’t think I wrote again for a while.

For my 18th birthday I got a ukulele and as my Mam lived to regret saying: “you’ll never learn how to play it, it’s a waste” she was wrong. I’ve had a total of 5 ukuleles. 2 sopranos which were a starting point. I now have 1 concert, 1 tenor and Barry the baritone.

The first song I composed was “Strong” I have versions of it everywhere. I still need to film the music video, the weather is letting me down. Over time I started writing relatable music and experimented with styles.

My first released song was “Road Trip” it’s kind of ironic because I can barely travel. It was fun to make the video though, it was my first official one. It could have been better but we were learning what worked.

The next release “All The Feels” was a song I forgot I wrote in 2018. It was about my health journey. When looking for something in a drawer, I came across it in a notebook. I was originally gonna do another song but this one felt right. The video was a daydream. “I wanna feel all the feels, in a world that isn’t real.” I could barely feel a thing at that point and I was living in a blur.

I still to date think I’m the worst singer ever but I do love song writing. It’s gave me a voice that I shied away from for years. I never really spoke for a long time. Now I don’t stop. I keep going as I know I’m not alone in my feelings or lack of.

This is your reminder to write down, whatever is in your head, even if it doesn’t make sense. Look at The Beatles, half of it you can’t decipher the meanings. Go for it.
