Heart Eyes review by Lee McShane

October 13, 2025

The last time a Valentine’s Day horror film caught my attention was the 1981 slasher My Bloody Valentine. There are not many Valentine’s Day horror films you can watch, but Heart Eyes is a fun film that is a perfect watch.

Directed by Josh Ruben and written by Philip Murphy, Michael Kennedy, and Christopher Landon, who also produces the film. It is a fun take on a slasher film and a seasonal horror film to watch around Valentine’s Day.

The film kicks off with Amazed by Lone Star to put us in that romantic mood as a couple on screen is proposing. Things do take a funny turn that starts the comedy off, and it is not long before the horror starts as they are hunted down and slaughtered by the titular villain.

On Valentine’s Day, we meet the characters we will stay with for the film: Ally, played by Olivia Holt, who works at a jewellery company and is recently single. On top of this, she’s in hot water with her boss over a controversial ad campaign. Her life is a mess right now, and that’s when Jay Simmons walks into the room. He’s played to absolute attraction by Mason Gooding, who nails this character. He’s been hired to help after Ally’s mistake, and he and Ally had a brief encounter earlier that day at a coffee shop.

There’s definitely chemistry between them, but Ally dismisses it, but she’s convinced to meet him later that day at a restaurant. There’s lots of talk about Heart Eyes Killer as they use Valentine’s Day to pick their couple to target, but Ally is insistent that it is not a date. Things get awkward, and when Ally sees her ex, she kisses Jay to make him jealous. Unfortunately, the killer is watching from a distance, and Ally has sealed her and Jay’s fate with a kiss.

When Ally gets back home with Jay, who was making sure she gets home safe, they are attacked by the killer, all while the pair scream they are not a couple to add to the humor. They survive, but they are hunted down.

I won’t say anymore, as I say, go and watch the movie for yourself. It will make you laugh while clutching your seat in suspense.
