Michael Landon was one of the most iconic television stars and filmmakers of the 20th century. As I have said before, his work often talked into human emotion and empathy. In the case of his son, Christopher, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Christopher Landon is an American filmmaker and has found his voice in the horror genre. He was born and grew up in Los Angeles and saw firsthand what the filmmaking business in Hollywood is like. He decided from a young age to become a filmmaker, inspired by his dad. Landon joined Loyola University to study screenwriting before dropping out.
He had his first major film credit by writing the 1998 crime drama, Another Day In Paradise. He followed this by writing and directing a segment in the anthology film Boys Life 3, a film that focuses on stories relating to gay men. Landon himself would come out as gay after Another Day In Paradise, something he is an advocate for, and he often includes gay characters in his work.
Landon would not work on anything for a few years after but would have a few scripts sold, including 2007’s Blood & Chocolate, a fantasy-horror directed by Katja Von Garnier, and Disturbia, a psychological film directed by D.J. Caruso, which was inspired by Rear Window.
After years of just writing, he would make his directorial debut with 2010’s Burning Palms, which was a satirical thriller starring Shannen Doherty and Rosamund Pike. It would be later that year when he would find his biggest success and breakthrough with the Paranormal Activity franchise.
Landon would write the script for Paranormal Activity 2, which would go on to earn $177 million on a budget of $3 million; while not as much as the first film in the franchise, which earned $194 million, it was still an amazing success. He would stay with the franchise from 2010 until the latest release in the series in 2021.
He worked as a screenwriter and producer on Paranormal Activity 3, 4, and Next Of Kin. Directed and wrote Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. It was a franchise that showed how much of a natural storyteller he is while maintaining a string of continuity details and realistic horror.
Landon has also been the creator of many other influential horror movies that have gained a fandom. He wrote and directed the 2017 film Happy Death Day, which stands out for its time-resetting plot similar to Groundhog Day, as well as its sequel, Happy Death Day 2 U.
In 2020, he wrote and directed the body swap comedy-horror Freaky, which earned praise from critics. He once again played these roles in 2023’s We Have A Ghost, another comedy-horror that focuses on a family and the goings-on in the said haunted house. He was also meant to direct Scream 7, but things fell through.
Landon is taking after his dad in the success department, as his films on average perform well at the box office. I look forward to seeing his future projects.
