4 years since Supernatural ended. Was it the best ending for the show? By Lee McShane

December 10, 2024

Supernatural was a show that revolved around two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, and their fight against vampires, demons, angels, and other creatures. It launched the main actors, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, into mainstream success.

It ran for an impressive 15 seasons from 2006 to 2020. The show got fans debating on how it would actually end. Which is a struggle most long-running shows find themselves with. After so long on air, you can’t just end it without clearing a lot of storylines up. There have been many shows that let fans down with how they ended. How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs, and Sex Education (yes, it wasn’t long-running) all had endings that didn’t satisfy with their endings. It left a lot unanswered.

So, here’s your spoiler alert if you haven’t watched it.
The show ends with a death, no surprises; on a regular hunt, Dean is pushed into a metal pipe and dies from his wounds. Sam is devastated at his loss. Now, Dean has died a few times, but this time there’s no return. No deals and no angles bringing him back. And leaves Sam to his worst fear. Needing to live his life without his brother. Despite thinking he couldn’t, Sam manages to go on and live a long life and dies of natural causes. When he gets to heaven he is reunited with Dean.

It’s an ending that does the show justice. It’s the only show where killing off the main characters won’t upset the fans. They had been through so much that seeing them being able to rest is a happy ending for them.

4 years later and this still rings true. Even with the spin-off, The Winchesters, airing, which didn’t live up to its hype, unfortunately.
