The scariest chapter of the franchise for sure. The best one too. It’s a life lesson about doing what you’re told and not messing with things you shouldn’t. I’ve seen this movie before but a long time ago so forgot the premise. I feel I’ve talked about it before too but not sure when.
The story follows The Warren’s daughter, Judy as her baby sister, Mary Ellen and her best friend Daniela look after her. Daniela is trouble and decides to take advance of the situation of being in The Warren’s to try to contact her Dad who she killed in a car crash. Ironically, we see this car crash at the beginning of the movie too.
Daniela messes with loads of the possessed items and does all the things she shouldn’t, essentially releasing all the spirits that are normally trapped in the room. This includes Annabelle, a bride’s dress which kills and many more.
Things obviously start going strange in the cliche way and then Daniela gets her karma. She regrets messing around and is trapped with all the demonic entities in one room. I think she should just get the karma rather than anyone else who did nothing.
We ironically see more of Annabelle in this whole movie than the franchise itself. One thing that hasn’t been answered yet is why is Annabelle so attached to Judy? Is it because she fears the doll and it knows? They’re known to feed off fear like said in the other movies.
The bonus which I never realised previously when watching is that we get introduced to more of the hauntings that aren’t covered in The Conjuring itself. I would like to know about these hauntings in better detail.
I sometimes wish logic existed in these movies, aka if this crazy stuff is happening but nobody about hears screaming. Nobody thinks to try the neighbours house so they’re less alone. Judy doesn’t hear any screaming. Mary Ellen doesn’t hear Daniella’s screaming in complete silence. It’s unpredictable. Judy sleeps through screaming but not when her blanket is tugged.
Surely, they’d try to escape when the first weird occurrence happened instead of normalising it?
One inconsistency that is missing from this movie is “Lucy Locket lost her pocket” did they randomly make it up for The Conjuring 4? Poor continuity, everything surrounding Judy is generally bad in this franchise.
Judy says to stop Annabelle she has to be back in her case, why didn’t you suggest that earlier? It would have fixed all of the mess.
Are the writers under thinking or am I overthinking? Both. Either way, it’s an average movie but the best of the franchise.
