Eight Crazy Nights Review by Lee McShane

September 18, 2026

This was one of those films that will be discovered through the power of TikTok.

I kept hearing a song that went “bum biddy biddy biddy bum bum”. I won’t lie, it took me ages to find out where that song was from, but I eventually found it, and it was a song called simply “bum biddy” from a film I had never heard before, Eight Crazy Nights.

This film is a very interesting one. It’s an Adam Sandler film from the early 2000s, so it is a respectable one. What surprised me was that this didn’t do very well at the box office. It’s an animated adult comedy musical film. The title is taken from the film’s setting at Christmas and during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

It was made for £34 million but only took in £24 million at the box office.

Personally, I think this is a good film. It tells the story of a troubled Jewish alcoholic, Dave, who, to avoid prison, must serve community service with a little old man, Whitey, who offers to help.

Whitey and his sister, Eleanor, are short, and Whitey is often mocked by the community. Davey is hostile towards them.

Despite the over-the-top nature of Whitey, he is a caring person who wants what’s best for his community despite their actions towards him.

Whitey is old and doesn’t have a job but is the local handyman who often works for free as he is too kind to demand payment.

This film shows that if you are a true heart, then people will take advantage of your kindness and mock you.

Davey spirals with his behaviour and is soon evicted by Whitey and is facing prison, but he soon realises what a bad person he is and sees that Whitey needs to be respected for his efforts.

Now, a running plot through the film is the local yearly competition, which the standout member of the community is awarded with a patch at a grand ceremony. An award that Whitey wants to win and believes he will do for his efforts.

Davey proves he has changed by appearing at the ceremony when Whitey doesn’t win the award. He stands up for whitey declaring he should have won and then breaks out into the ear biscuit of a song “Bum Biddy” which tells the story of Whitey being a decent human and the stories of the people mocking him”.

It’s so heartwarming to see the redemption to Davey as he’s very hate able from his self-destructive behaviour. There’s a great part in it where he lefts everyone knows they all, like him, just care for themselves and Whitey cares for others.

The ending is great, where the community rally around and hand Whitey his patch and they all rip off their patches and throw them to him as they now respect him.

Adam Sandler is no stranger to dramatic performances, Click made me cry, and this is no different. The comedy is kinda absurd but that’s the beauty you get with him.

I’d say this film is a solid 8/10
