2024 was a good year for horror. It was a year where I was excited for the upcoming films for the first time post-Covid. We had such films as The Substance, Abigail, and the long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

2025 is no different. Here are some of the films you need to watch out for:

28 YEARS LATER
The third film in this trilogy of zombie films. 28 Years Later sees the original screenwriter and director from the first film, 28 Days Later, return. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland give us a perfect zombie film. 28 Weeks Later was good, but it didn’t capitalise on what made the first one great. The trailer for the new one looks great and has gone viral with its use of the poem Boots by Kipling. There are a lot of new and familiar faces in the cast. It’s scheduled for release on 20th June.

THE BLACK PHONE 2
If you haven’t watched the first one, then I recommend you go and watch it before this is released. The first film is based on the short story by Joe Hill and brought to life by Scott Derrickson. Joe Hill pitched an idea for a sequel, which this new one seems to be what this one will be about. A majority of the cast from the first film will return, even Ethan Hawke, who plays The Grabber. Not much is known about the plot. I’m looking forward to this one as the first one was very intense. It will be released on 17th October.

MEGAN 2.0
The dancing queen is back. The first Megan had such an amazing promotion before it was released; I wonder if we will get the same treatment this time. Megan was an enjoyable film. It saw an AI doll who seemed unbeatable turn on its creator after being very protective of the girl it’s put in charge of. Once again, it will see the dangers of AI and dancing dolls. There are new characters, but the main actors return to play the same traumatised people. It’s scheduled to come out on 27th June.

FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S 2
A lot of sequels, huh? even more I won’t be listing. The first film lingered in Development hell for so long, a different animatronic film was even released based on it, Banana Spilts Movie, but we finally got to see Matthew Lillard in all his glory, well, you thought that from the promo and trailer. The first film was still pretty good. It differs from the game but in a good way. They use the lore that is out there and creates a true backstory for the characters that make you feel for the protagonist. I’m excited for this as the second game was a more interesting one than the first. A lot of characters and actors return and we can see what they will create. It will be released on 5th December.

DROP
An original film, yay, this will be a great watch. It’s by Christopher London, who gave us Happy Death Day 1 & 2 as well as a lot of Paranormal Activity films. It is a horror thriller, which is an interesting genre combo. It will be about a widowed woman played by Meghann Fahy who, after a date, gets a lot of disturbing drop messages to her phone and leads to her being stalked through cameras. It will be released on 11th April.
