The last time I saw news of a reimagining of The Mummy, it was the 2017 Tom Cruise one. From the announcement and what I had read about it I knew it wasn’t going to be a good film. Granted, I was, and still am, a big fan of the 1999 version, and I was comparing that to it.
Now, I’m sure a lot of people will feel the same nostalgia as me, aka the ones born in the 80s and 90s. It was a film I watched when I was about 8 years old and has been a film, and the sequel, I have watched more times than I can remember.
The 2017 film filled all of us with dread, and when it was released, our fears had been true. It was a critical and box office failure which ruined plans for a cinematic universe for classic Universal horror remakes.
I recently watched the trailer for the new reimagining of The Mummy that will be released in April this year. While the 1999 version was a mix of horror and action, and the 2017 one is strictly action, the new one will be certified horror.
When a couple’s daughter goes missing for 8 years, she is found in a sarcophagus in Cairo. It leads to an investigation on what happened as well as the girl showing signs that something isn’t right and that there are darker things at play.
That’s what I got from the trailer, which is the perfect one to intrigue you. The colour palette is dark, which fits the aesthetic that the film is going for.
It’s creepy. The imagery the director goes for works to heighten the tension and make the audience squirm. I hope that it is not another The Nun and uses way too many unnecessary jump scares.
All together, I think this should be a great entry into the series. Lee Cronin has shown he can master tension and filmmaking in his previous works, including Evil Dead Rise, so this one should not be any different.
