This is one of my all time favourite dalek stories. My Dad got me it from Love Film (showing my age). I was obsessed. I’d never seen the white and gold Daleks before. They soon became my favourite. It’s one episode I love to rewatch as it’s so different. The music is amazing, the special weapons, the hand of omega, it just hits right.

I recently watched for the, I don’t know, at least 15th time and only this time I realise something I’ve missed.

At the beginning of the episode, we hear Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech. I’m like “oh, I never realised” then it dawns on me what the episode is actually about. Was I dumb? Or did the BBC have to be apolitical at that time? I mean equal rights isn’t exactly political, it’s pro-humanity. Whatever. You know what I mean.

The episode is about 2 races of Daleks, ironically, one is white and one is an off black. One race of Daleks thinks the other one is inferior to them and they’re in a battle over the hand of omega which is used to fuel Gallifreyan time travel. I guess you could say, that represents the human rights part.

The imperial daleks are controlled by Davros, their creator so you could kind of say they are the elite daleks of the renegade ones which are controlled by a weird cockney little girl who sings.

I kind of wonder in real life, would Daleks be as powerful as they are in the episodes? I imagine that they would be leading in science and inventions.

One thing that’s interesting about this episode is that the imperial Daleks can levitate up stairs. I believe it’s the first time this is seen in the whole 25 series. It would have been a cliffhanger too for a week which makes it much better too.

I think the scariest thing from the season is the intro, it’s a jump scare if you’re not in expecting it, like a firework. Maybe it’s just me but I’m curious if others get a fright.

I absolutely love Ace, she’s very abrupt but still likeable enough.
