THE LIFE AND CAREER OF SAM RAIMI By Lee McShane

January 13, 2026

Sam Raimi is a very interesting person with a career that is what every filmmaker dreams of having. He started out as Indie as Indie can be and worked his way up to directing blockbuster Hollywood films and even Marvel films.

Sam Raimi was born on the 23rd of October, 1959, in Michigan, USA. His younger brother Ted and older brother Ivan are both in the film industry. He fell in love with comic books, especially Spider-Man, when he was growing up.

Raimi attended Michigan State University, where he studied English; he attended a local college, where he would meet his long-term collaborator, Bruce Campbell. He studied less than a year before dropping out to focus on filmmaking.

His first venture into film was with Bruce when he started making Super 8 short films. His first proper attempt was with the 1978 short film Within The Woods. He would get help from his brother’s roommate, Robert Tapert, who would work with Raimi throughout his career. The film would star most people who would work on The Evil Dead. He would follow this up with his first feature film, which he would write and direct, It’s Murder, an amateur film.

After he dropped out of university, he used his family and friends and connections to fund his first proper professional film, The Evil Dead. He used the same cast as his previous film and used locals to fill some crew and extra roles. They filmed for weeks in harsh conditions in Tennessee, but the film was complete with a budget of $375,000, and when it was released, it grossed a remarkable $29 million but also ended up landing him in court with obscenity charges over the tree scene in the film.

This was his breakthrough and led him to work on more high-value films. His next venture was the 1985 comedy film Crimewave, which he wrote and directed and had a budget of $2.5 million. However, it only made $5,000. He would bounce back with 1987’s Evil Dead 2, which was more successful. His next film that he would write and direct would be the 1990 superhero horror film Darkman, which had a budget of $15 million and made $48 million.

Raimi would continue to make films in the 90s and would step into TV as an executive producer for his friend Robert Tapert’s show Xena: Warrior Princess.

He would find Hollywood fame when he directed the 2002 film Spider-Man, which would have the biggest budget for him yet at $140 million and would earn a staggering $826 million. He would follow this up with Spider-Man 2 and 3, which all had impressive box office results.

He would return to comic book films when he joined the MCU, directing the 2022 film Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, which granted him a $415 million budget and raked in $950 million.

In his personal life, he married Gillian Greene, daughter of actor Lorne Greene, in 1993, and they have 5 kids together but separated in 2024. Apart from that, he’s a very private man.

His next film will be released in 2026. It is a horror-thriller called Send Help, which he directs and is producer.
