There have been so many video game adaptations that I have lost count as to how many there have been.
The most recent one I can think about is the Five Nights at Freddy’s film, as well as the Exit 8 film that I will be watching for next month.
Then I found out there was a film adaptation.
I have not played this game, but I knew what it was about as I have watched multiple YouTubers play this game and know what their plot is about and love the way they do their horror.
We follow the titular character who we play in the game, but there is a much deeper meaning behind their motives.
A nice addition is that we see the reason why the character, Rebecca, who has a lot of issues, is working at the mortuary, and it’s an issue that a lot of people will understand: drugs.
She’s a recovering addict, which adds intensity to the activity that happens in the film and gives those who know her a reason not to believe her.
Things start getting creepy fast, and we see bodies moving, which is a fear many will suffer from. This is just the start of the lore.
Something I do enjoy is that you don’t need to have played the game to enjoy it and understand what is happening. Though the game relied heavily on jump scares, this movie’s terror comes from psychological torment.
Somehow, the entity can manipulate Rebecca’s reality. Which works well for the confusion that the character is feeling and does well to confuse the audience as well to see what is real and what isn’t.
The acting from Willa Holland is phenomenal as she really makes us feel the terror at needing to defeat this seemingly unstoppable entity.
I would suggest playing the game if you want more lore, but I highly recommend this one if you are a psychological horror fan like myself.
I give it an 8/10.
