I started watching XO Kitty, and I found myself enjoying it. It was everything a quirky teen drama needs. A likeable character who moves to a new location to try and get closer to a parent who’s not with her anymore and meets new friends along the way. It has brilliant acting throughout and keeps you entertained with the story.
The big criticism I have is with the love triangles. Yes, triangles. Not a triangle. I understand that they can be important in certain storylines. It creates tension between characters and makes drama and a choice that a character needs to make. There’s usually one for a season of a show, as they can get pretty boring. XO Kitty takes the love triangle and throws the rules out of the window. Imagine the relationship map from Heartbreak High; that’s the level of crazy we are playing with. Kitty is going out with Dae, Kitty likes Yuri, Yuri is going out with Julianna, and Min-ho likes Kitty. And it continues in Season 2, adding on more branches. It’s just too much. It should have been Kitty managing her feelings for Yuri while managing her relationship with Dae.
I don’t know what they were thinking because sometimes I would be watching it, and I would forget who was meant to have feelings with whom. I can only imagine the notes the writers had to make to remind themselves of what was going on.
I have seen love triangles being used a lot more as a plot device in recent media, and it is being played to death. As I’ve discussed, it can be useful but gets boring very fast. With the rate I’m seeing it get used, it’s been used a few times in British soap operas this past year. I think it will be used more in new shows, which will harm how good they are. I’d even bet one is coming to the new series of Waterloo Road.
