Twister Vs Twisters By Lola Louise

July 23, 2024

A review from a tornado geek who likes to track them on radar from the UK. A girl who has been fascinated by them since she caught the end of twister in 2005 on TV. She didn’t know what one was but soon found herself enthralled.

I feel like the opening scene should have started with action, it felt a bit dry. Too basic to video themselves. It would have been better to do it another way. It didn’t add character development. The underpass scene was a disaster waiting to happen, sorry but it’s true. You’re worse off in an underpass because it creates a wind tunnel. It got debunked in Y2K. It’s better to be in a ditch. You’d have more chance of survival.

I love how when seeking shelter after the rodeo, they try to warn people and they straight up dismiss it because of false warnings. The siren stops as it’s sucked away and she’s like “see” then the tornado hits. It proves how irresponsible people can be. It happens in real life.

The title should have been a bit later in Twisters as it felt it should be after the action of the opening sequence and before Kate wakes up 5 years on. It didn’t have the impact without. I know that the original jumped in with the title but action straight up followed. It jumped in. My Mam watched it for the first time and she was like “aww no, not the dog” which shows that it caught attention. I think Michael Crichton would have loved the casting of Maura Tierney. I wish we saw more of her.

The background music felt too uplifting. In Twister, it was intense orchestral that brought the seriousness of the storm. It felt like it was missed. The ending, I would have had Tyler & Kate kissing. They hyped it up only for it to not happen which means they’re likely plotting another sequel. I wouldn’t mind it if I’m honest as tornadoes are unpredictable and not repetitive in any form.

I loved the pool scene, I thought it was completely different to anything I’ve ever seen. The water tower scene showing El Reno was smart as El Reno had one of the biggest tornadoes in history. The theatre/cinema scene was great, I like how they modernised it from the original as there’s not a lot of drive ins from what I’ve heard from American friends. .

I feel the humour could have been better. It didn’t seem as memorable as the OG. “We’ve got cows” “another cow” “I think that was the same cow” “It sucked” “the suck zone” there was elite tier banter missing. “We’ve got twins.” They’re iconic. All we got in the new was “if you feel it, chase it.” I like that they included the nostalgia of “I’m not back.”

I like how they dealt with PTSD in a non conventional way. Most times it’s dealt with stereotypically and then brushed off. It was realistic about how it affects people. Why did they look for a basement in Oklahoma when 90% of houses and buildings don’t have them? The ground is too wet for them. It wasted time in getting people to safety.

Question: What happened to Scott? He was left on the road before the tornado hit. Did he survive? No answer. Some bits seems very unnecessary and didn’t add anything. Why were people not in a rush to get inside somewhere? Like it’s a big ass tornado. Can’t you see that? Why are you more protecting over belongings than your life?

I feel like the ending should have been where Kate gets pulled out the car alive. It would have been better and sweeter. A happier ending. Standout characters: Lily is awesome. Love her. Wish we saw more of her. I would have liked to know more about Tyler. Also, too many people got sucked into the tornado. The opening was enough. It was overused.

8/10 for now. Mainly because I’m still processing and I want to see it again. I do recommend it though.
