When I was struggling to decide what to watch, I looked at the recommendations Shudder gives you, and this film popped up.
Now, I have a fond love for found footage horror movies, and this one reminded me of The Taking of Debra Logan, a film which I loved. Unfortunately, this didn’t meet the same standards.
While the main actor playing Ozzie, who is seeking answers to what happened to their grandmother when they were younger, turns her into a different character that seems to act possessed.
With her grandmother’s death, reports of ghost sightings in a library where she used to work. We see photo evidence of this.
An impressive way this is filmed is through multiple devices: Zoom, Ozzie’s camera, as well as CCTV. This gives the film a very personal touch.
One strong way in which this film gives us characterisation is through Zoom calls with their therapist as they discuss what happened with their grandmother, and it is the therapist’s words that lead to the film as they told them to start a video diary.
The true horror moments come from Ozzie exploring the library where her grandmother worked, and her ghost was spotted. They investigate over multiple nights, all while paranormal activity picks up from shadow figures to full-body apparitions.
One night, a book falls from the shelf, and Ozzie reads from it, which seems to kick everything off. We see activity pick up and an entity seemingly haunting Ozzie’s flat, and their behaviour changing like her grandmother’s.
I have to give credit to Asya Meadows, who plays the character with natural ease, and there’s a likability from their character who is struggling with trauma and grief. There is a scene where they are meant to be angry and under oppression from the entity, and they intimidate their dad who visits them with a knife. Their facial expression and line delivery were very flat. I understand where they are going with this choice, but it didn’t work, sadly.
The ending is pretty good. It is intense and theirs plenty of times where action happens in the background so you need to keep your eyes open.
Now, there’s a lot of things where this film misses at. The ending seems to come out of nowhere. It’s not set to and ruins the pacing that was, up until this point, perfect.
I will say that the acting is very natural and realistic which is what you need if you are going for a found footage film.
Danny Villanueva Jr is the writer and director and has produced a very respectable horror film.
I’d give this a solid 6.5/10.
