Crystal Castles at Benicassim 2012

July 15, 2012

At 3am Crystal Castles take the stage for the unofficial nightly “party slot”, which is often a dance based act to close the main stage. Far less mainstream than the other three acts playing this slot on the other nights, one wonders how their jagged electro will go down. It’s also an interesting booking as they come straight after the dream Madchester duo of Stone Roses and Noel Gallagher.

But this crowd want anything that will get them jumping, and Crystal Castles smash it. It’s an emotionally wrecking sound. But when it’s spat out with such ferocity the darkness contained within is put aside by the masses, who gobble up its sonic thrust. Unless they’re actually all contented existential masochists that enjoy the intrinsic nihilism pulsing through the shattered blips we hear.

Alice Glass plays the role of the purple haired ecstatic computerised woman, leading the Benicassim army into battle against the rising sun. Reaching into the audience to grab a crowdsurfer’s hand, she continues singing ecstatic shrieks over the thrusting glitches of noise surrounding her.

The set culminates with a sea of frenetic arms and occasional girls on shoulders. All remain moving throughout and only pause briefly to take orders from their space-age overlords on stage, who leave the stage at the end without a word.
