Opening with an extended version of ‘Give Me Love’, immediately the entire audience were in the palm of his hand. Contrary to popular thought, sweeter than sweet Ed Sheeran is something of a beast on stage – he’s a natural born performer. Everyone was dancing, everyone was singing along. At one point, he asked the men in the audience to sit the women on their shoulders, and then we had the lighters out (and the mobile phones, this is the 21st century after all) swaying from side to side, all hands in the air.
On stage, his talent as a singer-songwriter was undeniable; his melodies were catchy, and his vocal ability was impressive (apparently Ed Sheeran doesn’t need to breathe like the rest of us!) Highlights of the set included a revved up cover of Nina Simone’s ‘Be My Husband’, a moving performance of his latest single ‘Small Bump’, and hit song ‘The ATeam’, on which he called it a night.
In a word, it was fantastic… or unexpected, even, but in a good way. Delivering time and time again, we’ve got to hand it to him; he knows how to work the crowd. Go and see him if you get the chance – we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
