Ham Sandwich at Benicassim 2012

July 14, 2012

Straight outta County Meath, Ham Sandwich take to the stage as about a thousand Irish fans dash over from watching fellow Irish band Delorentos. Obviously Ham Sandwich are MORE Irish because they have a violin player and their vocalist sounded a bit like Dolores from The Cranberries on one song. Obviously.

Greeting the crowd with a shout of “Hello Benidorm”, Ham Sandwich kick into some rousing, dramatic rock music. It’s scenic stuff that often races to a bold conclusion. The “Hello Benidorm” guitarist (Podge) shouts “Hello England” next. This is definitely a nod to the Anglo dominance of the bill which has lead to displeasure from some critics in Spain, definately.

Lead vocalist Niamh is a woman with edge and enigma but also a playful innocence. This contrasts to Podge’s, who was bearded, thrashing around the stage and drinking from a bottle that was sitting in an inflatable flamingo holder. This was on top of the aforementioned biting social commentary that was definitely deliberate. When singing together, Niamh’s more delicate touches compliment Podge’s deeper expulsions. However, when necessary she could also bellow like a fiend.

Shortly before a number called ‘The Naturist’, an “Ole” chant breaks out from the lively (and predominantly Celtic) crowd. A crowd that is clearly desperate for some nudes, the perverts. It gets going with some violins and drums before they hammer out a distortion-heavy monster and a cover of Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up that Hill.’

It’s rousing stuff that probably got one of the biggest early crowds of the whole weekend.
