Jeff Lynne and ELO make me feel better about where I’m from

June 26, 2016

Over the past few days, my relationship with where I’m from has pretty much been ruined. The West Midlands had the highest proportion of ‘vote leave’ votes over any other area of the UK. My home overnight became a symbol. I couldn’t believe how twisted and isolated my beloved self-deprecating, musically-potent West Midlands had become.

However watching Jeff Lynne and ELO today, connecting over one hundred thousand voices and minds with one another inspired a feeling of hope. This giant Brummy man, with his giant Brummy hair. A giant of the music world: a piece of fabric central to our culture, spraying out some of the most potent pop tunes in our consciousness was simply wonderful. His unassuming air and presence was a million miles away from the shock and awe of Dolly Parton and Lionel Richie we’ve enjoyed over the past two years, but you have to remember, Birmingham is 4042 miles away from Tennessee.

And all in all, there’s no better way to combat and resolve the ominous skies ahead than under the unifying blanket of ‘Mr Blue Sky’. It’s the defining moment that everybody was waiting for when the lineup was announced, and it doesn’t disappoint.
