Live at Black Deer: The Teskey Brothers

June 18, 2023

It’s late in the afternoon and the heat of the day has caught up with most people. Ice creams are aplenty and the shouts of children going down the helter skelter are drifting through the air. Ok – the children are actually going down the slide just fine and it’s my shouts you can hear, regretting my quest for adventure.

Australian Band ‘The Teskey Brothers’, described as ‘old school Mowtown sound’ and the first band to have been booked for this year’s Black Deer, are the perfect way to recover from the stress of landing face first in the grass. Opening with ‘Oceans of Emotions’, I’m calmed by the easy listening. The vocals are melodic and vibrato is expertly controlled, clean and sweet guitar rifts providing gentle licks that add to my now-dreamy state. The whole effect is soulful.

Brass and percussion creates a celebration of the summer for the huge crowd that stretches as far as the eye can see. I’m lulled as the band introduce ‘Take My Heart’, thinking that would provide any couple the perfect first dance; it’s slow and heartfelt.

Closing off their set with a rousing “Hold on” I’m happy to just let Blues wash over me as I sip my beer, appreciating the relaxation and talent this band brings to all around.
