Morrissey and Marshall at Oakley Safehouse

July 27, 2012

With the opening Olympic ceremony just hours away the buzz in the Oakley Safehouse was electric. People were giddy with the excitement of being able to stand on the Safehouse balcony overlooking the Thames to see the torch go by on no other than Gloriana – only the royal rowbarge!!

With all the celebrations we had to start our second acoustic session with something special and we certainly did. Step up Morrissey and Marshall. No we’re not talking about the Smiths lead singer! Although that certainly doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get excited, far from it!

Irish duo Morrissey and Marshall were as appealing as shiny things to magpies and we couldn’t keep our eyes off them. Beginning their set with a selection of mellow folk songs includingOaktree and Far from Paradise, and with all the intricacies of The Beach Boys vocal harmonies, Morrissey and Marshall were fantastically engaging and had a remarkably large sound for only two people.

The focus was seemingly on their amazing voices that naturally complemented each other so beautifully. We saw the set take a more upbeat turn with the song Marthawhich got our toes tapping happily away! Giving a nice contrast of moods and fitting in perfectly with the feel of the day as people got ready to see the opening ceremony later.

The pair slipped in a couple of cover songs starting with The Visiting Song by Irish folk band The Dubliners. A hearty, traditional song with a wholesome feel that made us feel like snuggling around an open fire with cup of hot chocolate, followed by Nowhere Man by the Beatles with a Morrissey and Marshall twist.

Ending their set with In Need of Guidance, at one point relying only on voice with no guitars, the pair shone at the end giving a truelly standout performance.

With a debut album due to be released in 2013, Morrissey and Marshall look set to go far so keep your eyes peeled!
