Slick and tight. But thats enough about Brandon Flowers sparkly suit. The same adjectives apply equally to his band the Killers too, however, who closed out the Pyramid Stage amid confetti, fireworks, the Pet Shop Boys and Johnny Marr. Yes, really.  

They say that people dont really change and that they often revert to type, well theres something of the Vegas house band to this band from LV, Nevada. That is not necessarily intended as a pejorative description. It is just that this group is so effortlessly versatile, comfortable and full of pizzazz, panache and poise that it can make you wary as to their sincerity.

In keeping with this observation, they rattle seamlessly through songs in a blink of an eye. Each nod and gesture seemingly choreographed, plotted, rehearsed. It makes for an efficient performance but perhaps lacking a little bit of soul. The band open with a flurry of tracks from what probably remains their greatest artistic statement to date, Hot Fuss. Jenny Was a Friend of Mine and Somebody Told Me work the crowd into a frenzy and the pace doesnt really let up.

There is plenty of evidence on show of their progression from scruffy indie synth lynchpins to purveyors of Springsteen-esque widescreen, blue collar rock. Songs such as Runaways and The Way it Was show this off proudly. It is not for everyone but it has a sweep that is hard not to admire.

Elsewhere, the likes of The Man glistens as a slice of brilliant 80s-indebted pop. Other highlights include a raucous When You Were Young, an elongated Read My Mind and the appearance of the Pet Shop Boys for a duet cover of their number 1 smash cover Always on My Mind. This is arguably trumped when Johnny Marr appears out of the side of the stage to rip through This Charming Man.

Not ones to let this momentum go to waste, they tear into a closing Mr Brightside and by this point, pretty much everyone present has been won over. The sceptics were steamrolled by the might of this most professional of bands. Brandon Flowers might be quite a hard frontman to warm to (partly because he just seems a bit, well, conceited and smug. Or maybe thats just us) but hes also blimmin good. 

It cannot be denied that The Killers came and conquered. They made a field of people very happy indeed and isnt that what you want from music when all is said and done? Triumphant.
