The Maccabees at Benicassim 2012

The Maccabees attracted a crowd so enormous that it was worth taking a picture (literally – one of the band members took a photo of the lot of us.) They seemed to surpass even their own expectations, admitting that they didn’t anticipate such a large and enthusiastic crowd. But that was part of the beauty of it all.

The Maccabees performed with an air of modesty which immediately charmed the audience. Their flawless instrumentation and Orlando Weeks’ voice were just as captivating, if not more so, than on record. Their set balanced between lesser known songs and greatest hits, even dedicating ‘Can You Give It?’ to Bombay Bicycle Club – the other indie frontrunners that night.

It was clear from the exchanged smiles between band members that they were loving the experience just as much as we were, which is always refreshing and just a little bit heart-warming to see. The good news for us was that they said that they wanted to come back next year! Here’s hoping…
