For many years there was no Abba, there was just tribute acts… but now we have the real ABBA back and they’ve become unhappy with one of their imitators. As a result, ABBA are suing British tribute act ABBA MANIA.
Why? Well, the original band accuse the other of being “parasitic” and acting in “bad faith” by giving the impression they are endorsed by ABBA thanks to using terms like “official and original”:
“Defendants include the term ‘official’ and ‘original’ in many of their marketing materials, website pages, and social media handles,” Billboard quoted “which gives consumers the impression that there is some kind of association, affiliation, or sponsorship between ABBA and ABBA MANIA”.
According to the lawsuit ABBA offered ABBA MANIA the chance to change things, but were ignored. It feels unlikely the tribute act will win against the power of the real ABBA.
