Leicester police get an average of 600 emergency calls a weekend, but during Download Festival that doubles.

Not, it must be stressed, because anyone’s hurt, but because many of our personal electronics – like smartwatches – think you being in the mosh pit is an accident and auto ring 999.

The problem is, a call to 999 has to be investigated properly: if someone calls and doesn’t then speak, the handlers have to make three separate attempts to ring back and see if you’re in trouble. Even if your smartphone’s done it in the middle of going crazy in the pit.

The advice is, if you’re going to throw your body around, please put all your electronics on airplane mode first. Then, yunno, knock yourself out… poor choice of words.
