We have an answer to the question of: could Sacha Baron Cohen get away with the character of Ali G today? Obviously, Ali G isn’t racist as he’s been accused, he’s a satire on people culturally appropriating, but would anyone bother to tell the difference?

Well, we’re about to find out, as the character has been revived for stand up shows. Cohen was speaking to GQ and explained he’d done a set as Ali G: “Yes. I just wanted to get on stage and muck around and see what Ali G would be like with a crowd. It was really good fun.”

Asked if he’d do more, he said yes and why: “Yes, I think I would… Because the reason I became a comedian was that I loved people laughing at my jokes… To actually hear laughter is a rare thing for me. When I do the movies, I think it is funny, but I have to wait three months to hear an audience laugh.”

Eyes peeled if you’re into this.
