Black Deer Focus: The Goat Roper Rodeo Band

There is no act at the 2021 Black Deer Festival with a better name than the The Goat Roper Rodeo Band; maybe some tied for the top, but not better. You’d hope with a name like that they’d produce country music that was entirely off kilter, and marvellously they do. For instance, look at the video for Main St. Filmed by on iPhone during the first Covid lockdown in Wales, it sees the band in equal parts larking round and performing shamanic ritual, a kooky and crazy set of rural psychedelic visuals with the blues by way of Super Furry Animals.
Then there’s the video for Desert Flower, when the trio played live for the Silk Mill Sessions: two guitars, a double bass, sweet harmony and a lead vocal of a man only half in this mortal plane.  We’ve also got a more low key number, Bright Lights and Deadbeats, which is again shot just on iPhone but this time in black and white.
