Many of Americana’s greatest songs sound like the damned’s hymns, with a streak of honest religion shooting right through the genre. William Prince’s father was not just a singer, but a preacher and a gospel performer too, so it’s no wonder his songs can have that heavy spirit. Influenced by Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and more, Prince would add to this description by saying his songs are powerful, but bring a calm and we would add of the judged, whether for good or ill.
Prince hails from Canada and has been learning and performing since he was nine, and now counts a Juno award and a pair of great albums to his name. Called Earthly Days and Reliever, the LPs feature his smooth voice, a neutral accent which would have come from many regions, and portentous tone.
We’ve got some heart trembling songs, firstly Breathless and then The Spark, and a fifty-minute set from Live at Studio 211. Black Deer Festival 2020 is at Eridge Park, Kent, June 19 to 21st. Tickets are on sale now: https://blackdeerfestival.com/
