Britain humiliated at Eurovision

Britain had a terrible time at the Eurovision Song Contest this weekend. They got a few points in the jury votes, but the general voting public gave them nothing.

We’re sure the BBC are conducting an inquest, but a few things struck us.

The staging tried to be clever, but ended up distracting. Flipping between people upside down and rightway up with many sharp camera cuts caused a disorientation that meant you spent your time trying to focus on what you were seeing and not the song.

In addition, the song wasn’t good for a contest. There was nothing about it that made the ears prick up and people take notice.

Did the performance try and cover for the song but just end as making it even more forgettable?

It’s unclear how this happened. Olly Alexander is a proven performer, how did no one get him a better song?

Switzerland and Ireland made huge impacts with both good songs and good staging. Lessons can be learned.
