We’re not entirely sure what mood Damon Albarn was in when he did a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, but he ended up accusing Taylor Swift of not writing her own songs.
Yeah, yunno, the Taylor Swift famed for songwriting.
They were discussing writing in the interview when Albarn claimed Swift “doesn’t write her own songs” and went in hard on the presence of co-writing credits: “That doesn’t count. I know what co-writing is,” Albarn said, “Co-writing is very different to writing… I’m not hating on anybody, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes. Doesn’t mean that the outcome can’t be really great.”
So who does he rate? “A really interesting songwriter is Billie Eilish and her brother,” Albarn continued, “I’m more attracted to that than to Taylor Swift. It’s just darker — less endlessly upbeat. Way more minor and odd. I think she’s exceptional.”
Now, clearly Taylor isn’t going to accept this slander, and she’s taken to the social media to fire a broadside back:
