Ed Sheeran has been testifying in a copyright trial in which he is accused of plagiarising Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On for his own song Thinking Out Loud.
The lawsuit has been brought by Ed Townsend, one of the co-writers of Let’s Get It On, and claim there’s “striking similarities” and a stolen rhythm and ascending four chord section. Sheeran denies this, and has said the trial is taking a toll on him.
“If that happens, I’m done, I’m stopping,” he says of potentially losing, “I find it really insulting to devote my whole life to being a performer and a songwriter and have someone diminish it.”
Townsend’s team are claiming the fact Sheeran did a mash up of the two songs during a gig is an ‘admission’ of guilt. Sheeran explained to Rolling Stone.
