Foals have released many excellent tracks, but for us their absolute best work was Spanish Sahara. A cut from their second album, it’s a slower, deeply emotional song we’ve turned to in times of stress.
So, our ears pricked up when Foals singer Yannis explained where that combination of words originated. It’s via Andrew Mears, who was the original singer in Foals and who gave Yannis a cassette wrapped in what seems to be an old book with the legend Spanish Sahara on. From there, great things came. See the tweet below.
Today is the ten year anniversary of Spanish Sahara being released. This is the original reference for the track title, taken from a cassette my friend & original singer in Foals Andrew Mears made for me. I’ve never opened the tape & don’t intend to. Yannis pic.twitter.com/CJ8sZtslYD
