I have mixed feelings about this. I’m a very sceptical person over whether films that are already successful need a remake, especially when they are younger than 50 years. I can understand a modern version of a film, but a remake for what seems like no reason other than money is a bad idea, in my opinion.
When I heard they were remaking the second most influential horror film of the 90s behind Scream, I was trying to think of a reason why they would remake it. Scream has an excuse due to the theme of it mimicking horror film trends that change over time, which makes it make sense as to why a Ghostface would be that meta, as is the norm for the franchise.
I Know What You Did Last Summer isn’t a great franchise; it’s a great film; the sequels let it down in a big way. I Still Know What You Did has major character issues as well as being too ambitious with its killer. I Always Know is a victim of the 2000s let’s make whatever horror we can and release it direct to video syndrome and is better off being forgotten about.
Now, the trailer. We start off in a very Scream-inspired opening. Two characters in the supposed safety of their home while something lurks outside. The bath bomb the female character uses is very symbolic of the slaughter we will see in the film. It also adds a ranged weapon to the fisherman villain, a harpoon, I believe, which gives them a more unique danger than the previous killers.
We return to Southport and see what I am led to believe will be our group of friends we will follow, which includes the female from the opening whose partner is killed. It already feels like a modern version of the film with the characters. Then the familiar scribble writing of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
In steps, the connection to the OG. Freddie Prinze Jr and a flash of the graves of the victims of the OG film. We see various flashes of the characters finding bodies and being attacked by the killer before the main focuses, aside from Freddie, which got me excited. Jennifer Love Hewitt. Her character has survived the fisherman twice; will she make it a third, or will they take a note out of Scream’s playbook and kill an OG? We have to wait to see.
