Download Festival has been sensibly cancelled due to the Corona virus, because fifty thousand people in a field can’t use the testing their eyesight excuse. But as you contemplate whether the confused government message on isolation means you can go out without killing your gran or not, fear not: Virtual Download is coming.
June 12th to 14th is going to see the rockers main event moved online, via Download TV, aka their social channels and website: “The weekend will be split into day and evening, where the day will be everything that celebrates the spirit of Download Festival, and the evening brings 2 to 3 hours of tailor-made programming where Downloaders can tune in and rock out.”
Friday night will be headlined by Kiss, and Saturday by Iron Maiden, and if you were hoping for someone recent on Sunday, nope, you’re getting System of a Down. However, earlier in the schedule will be Frank Carter and his excellent recent work, as well as a parade of quality groups.
“Downloaders are encouraged to put tents up in the garden, wear Download merch, dress as your favourite hero, send in photos and videos – the weekend is about the fans and celebrating the Download community.” Normally we’d be a bit cynical about such a blatant buy our t-shirts plug, but they did some specifically to raise money for the NHS.
