Jennifer Lopez is being sued after putting some photos onto Twitter and Instagram. The bizarre thing is they were photos of her.
Lopez was papped arriving at Amazon MGM Studios and Vanity Fair’s Golden Globes party, so technically these photos belong to the paparazzi who took them, and she posted them without buying the required rights.
Photographer Edwin Blanco and his agency, Backgrid, are suing for $150,000 per photo.
“Ms Lopez’s unauthorised use of the Images is commercial in nature, intended for the purpose of self-promotion,” says the lawsuits. “For example, Ms Lopez used the Images to spotlight the designer of her clothing and jewellery, leveraging the publicity from the event to promote her fashion affiliations and brand partnerships.”
The accusers are, of course, right, you don’t own a photo just because you’re in it, and you can’t use it without permission. But it’s hard to feel sympathetic for the paparazzi.
