Lord of the Rings TV Show has spent 465 million on the first season
When Amazon announced they’d bought the rights to a Lord of the Rings TV show, it was revealed they’d pledged a billion dollars to make a multi season storyline. Well, information has come out (oddly, via the government of New Zealand’s Official Information Act) and it suggests season one has so far cost $465 million dollars.
That’s surely the most expensive season in TV history, with the comparator being Game of Thrones costing 100 million a season. But given the massive impact of streaming, if you view Lord of the Rings as another movie series in a world where Netflix paid $450 for Knives Out 1 and 2, and realise a lot of that is setup costs for the whole project (like getting someone to write a decent six season plotline before they begin… we fucking hope), then it feels understandable.
We could do the First Law trilogy with much less, hit us up Jeff Bezos.
