Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You has become such a Christmas staple the idea of defrosting Mariah the day after Halloween so she can sing it became a cultural cornerstone.
What you might not know is that in 2022 she was sued in a claim she stole it.
The accuser was Adam Stone, who said his 1989 hit of the same name from his band Vince Vance and the Valiants. He wanted millions.
A judge has now ruled and Mariah has won: she wrote it.
“The claimed similarities are an unprotectable jumble of elements: A title and hook phrase used by many earlier Christmas songs, other commonplace words, phrases, and Christmas tropes like ‘Santa Claus’ and ‘mistletoe’,” the judge said. An expert testified to “no significant melodic similarities” and the judge decided not only had Mariah won and Stone had to pay her costs, but that his lawyers should suffer sanctions for “frivolous” arguments, that included “vague… and incomprehensible mixtures of factual assertions and conclusions, subjective opinions, and other irrelevant evidence”.
