Mercury Prize announce dates

The Mercury Music Prize managed to award itself last year, but in a very different way to the live award ceremonies of the past. Michael Kiwanuka was the worthy winner, and he’ll be joined by someone this year on the night of September 9th. The Mercury’s have announced this as the 2021 awards night, pending whatever government guidelines are in place of course.

While there’s some doubt over the precise format of that, there’s surely no way the date July 22nd will be missed, as that’s when the twelve album long shortlist will be announced, and we all go scrambling to Spotify to find the obscure jazz act we’ve never heard of.

The BBC will once again cover the award, but perhaps this time it won’t need a slot on the One Show.
