Muse comment on changing setlist for Malaysia

Recently, Muse had the job of playing in Malaysia in the aftermath of The 1975 getting a festival cancelled and then buggering off to leave the locals facing the legal and economic repercussions. Muse thus faced an additional pressure, in trying to perform in a way that kept the international music scene in Malaysia going. If they’d fucked it too, things could be over.

In the end, they agreed not to play We Are Fucking Fucked, but they instead opted to play Resistance which says “Love is our resistance / They’ll keep us apart, and they won’t stop breaking us down / Hold me / Our lips must always be sealed.”

Muse drummer Dominic Howard does not consider this a downgrade, saying it was “a more poignant message given the circumstances”.

Everyone wins.
