Over 1000 musicians release silent album to protest new AI laws

Over one thousand musicians have come together to release a protest album. The twist? It’s completely silent.

The government are proposing new laws on AI to favour the tech companies, and the law would allow them to train their models on anything on the web unless artists and creators specifically opt out. The musicians behind the campaign argue this is impossible and will allow AI crawl everything they’ve done, breaking copyright.

For the government this is because the “current regime for copyright and AI is holding back the creative industries, media and AI sector from realising their full potential – and that cannot continue”. For the campaigners “The British government must not legalise music theft to benefit AI companies.”

The album is called Is This What We Want? It’s silent but was recorded in empty studios. The tracklisting spells out “The British government must not legalise music theft to benefit AI companies.”

As Kate Bush said “In the music of the future, will our voices go unheard?”
