1st. Pearl 2nd. Maxxxine 3rd. X

I didn’t know what to expect with Pearl after trying and failing to get through X. I watched it because I thought it was a horror movie, it was more like a porno. Not for me at all. I was pleasantly surprised with Pearl. She was my entire heart, I would ride at dawn for her. She deserved the absolute world and the best life. It felt like everyone would sabotage her entire life, her friends weren’t even her friends, they were only around to show off how good everything was for them which is the worst thing for someone who feels stuck.

Pearl wants to be a star but she’s stuck on a farm, unable to do what she wants with her life despite being a grown adult. Everything is her responsibility and never anyone else’s, she’s essentially the family slave. She has dreams and the star power to get her there but nobody supports who she is and who she wants to be. She’s forced into the same mold as her mother and doesn’t want to end up like her, miserable.

I feel like she’s confident in who she wants to be and insecure in her present self. She trusts people too easy and doesn’t realise that it sometimes comes with heartbreak. I feel bad for her, I really do. She feels betrayed by everyone she knows, every time she thinks “I’m getting out of here” she gets let down in every way till she snaps. Everyone has their limits of what they can take.

I think A24 is amazing with making likeable characters compared to most horror movies out there. You absolutely love the characters and their back stories. You have empathy for them, even when you shouldn’t. Most of the time, you watch a horror and you don’t care what happens next. In this case, I want to know more about Pearl’s journey. I want to know if she has left the farm and pursued her dreams. I’d hate to think she was still on the farm. She needs to dump Howard, she didn’t seem to care and take off to France. I’ve never wanted better for any character as much as Pearl.

When you watch Maxxxine, you know that’s the story that Pearl would have loved, to finally achieve success. If you have a talent in life, never let it go to waste.
