Sad news coming out today: according to reports in the Jamaica Observer, Lee Scratch Perry has died. He was 85.
So closely associated with reggae and dub he’s always felt like part of the foundations, Perry was a widely admired musician, and apparently passed after an illness although no details have been given.
How important was Perry? To music and to Jamaica? Their actual Prime Minister has spoken: “My deep condolences to the family, friends, and fans of legendary record producer and singer, Rainford Hugh Perry OD, affectionately known as ‘Lee Scratch’ Perry.”
PM Andrew Holness continued “Undoubtedly, Lee Scratch Perry will always be remembered for his sterling contribution to the music fraternity. May his soul Rest In Peace.”
What a life he led, and what a legacy he leaves.
