The Rolling Stones have announced their first album of new material in a long time, and Hackney Diamonds will be out on 20th October. It features late drummer Charlie on several songs.
The release has also given us a fun game to play in the office: can anyone guess what Hackney Diamonds means? The band confirmed at the press conference.
Asked why that title, Keith Richards said, “It got called ‘Hackney Diamonds’ because we were flinging ideas around for titles, and we went from ‘Hit And Run’ [to] ‘Smash And Grab’. And somehow, between that, we came up with ‘Hackney Diamonds’ which is like a variation of both… “Also, it’s a London band.”
But bless host Jimmy Fallon for asking what we all wanted to know, was it “a type of slang”. Mick Jagger replied: “Yeah, it’s like when you get your windscreen broken on Saturday night in Hackney, and all the bits go on the street… that’s ‘Hackney Diamonds’.”
