Save your hair and wear wigs By Lola Louise

I’m that girl who fell in love with wigs after Hannah Montana, I always wanted hair that I couldn’t have and no matter how many times I tried, my hair was just not doing what I wanted it to. My first proper wig was £25 which for a 9 year old was “really expensive” to today when I’ve spent £260 on one. Don’t ask how much I’ve spent in my life, I lost count a decade ago.

I’ve had some absolute hair disasters, late 2019 to be exact, it actually traumatised me. My hair not only fried but so did my scalp, my hair was yellow and ugly, it was so damaged I couldn’t even touch it. It was like noodles. Save yourself from this disaster because I’m going to tell you how it can be avoided and in the cheapest way possible.

If you want your hair dyed properly, it is costly now, it can range from £50 to in the £100’s and there’s no guarantee it will work out the way you want it to. That’s the sad thing. Been there too many times.

My wigs have been my saviour. If you’re as impulsive as I am, you’ll love the idea. One of my absolute top brands is Sleek, they’re a UK based company who do lace fronts and lace parts. For those who don’t know the difference, lace fronts have lace around your hairline, lace parts have lace as a part. I love them both, although I’m leaning towards their lace parts due to the very present designs they have. Who doesn’t love the Sabrina Carpenter bangs? They’re amazing. I have 2 versions of Callie which are £40 each. I’ve had mine over a year now and guess what? They’re still in brand new condition despite wearing loads. Absolutely amazing.

A secondary brand I adore which is so hard to find now is Kali, there’s not a wig from them that has let me down. I am obsessed with their 4×4 lace front. It is so comfortable and realistic. The colours are chef’s kiss and you absolutely get your wear from them. They don’t tangle much or shed.

Another one which I haven’t been able to get as much so I’ve had to outsource is Sensationnel, their dashly range comes in many styles and colours, the hair quality is unmatched sometimes. People never knew it was a wig, they always thought it was my hair.

The best thing with these brands is the hair quality is superior. It’s not shiny, it’s not obvious, it doesn’t get as tangled and lasts a long time.

One thing I love is whipping the wigs off in public. I once whipped off mine that I was using to make my hair look thicker, a little boy in the middle of London, his jaw dropped, he grabbed his mothers sleeve and pointed in shock. I love reactions like that, that’s when you know you did good.

I went from wearing wigs that people knew didn’t look good and would point out to undetectable within a few years. People always have asked: “Is it itchy?” No, not really, it depends on the lace. “Does it get warm?” No, as the the UK is mostly cold. “Do you not feel weird?” No, I feel more myself sometimes. It’s fun to experiment with colours without the worry of damage.

I’m going to tell you my favourite places to buy:
Afrostyling, it’s a Manchester based supplier.
Hair City, my local beauty store.
Elevated Styles, these are based in America but are super reliable and have great bargains.
