Thanks to being a genius and never giving up, Kate Bush owns the copyright to Running Up That Hill, as well as the performance, writing and production rights. That means she keeps the bulk of any sales or streaming revenue…
…and boy oh boy has there been some sales and streaming revenue. After Stranger Things used the song as a plot point, interest has soared, chart positions have soared, and so the cash has flown in.
Luminate aka Nielsen Soundscan, as reported in Music Business Worldwide, has calculated that all this has generated Bush around $2.3 million. That’s not a typo, over two million dollars.
Kate has released a statement on the continued success of the song and the series, which gives an insight into how it’s affecting her: “We hope you understand that we want to honour the energy that’s being generated by the audiences right now,” she said. “An energy that feels very special, unique and quite frankly, bloody moving.”
She’s moved!
