The crazy law that forced a Welsh horror movie to film in England

Bryn Chainey wanted to film his horror movie Rabbit Trap in Wales: after all, a core element is the Welsh myth of the Tylwyth Teg, aka Fair Folk. They even cast a Welsh guy as the lead.

A great deal of time and effort was spent searching Wales for the perfect location, one was found and fell through, and as the search deepened someone discovered a law. There’s a Wales specific law which forbids smoking on a film set, even if it’s the actors during a scene.

Given that both leads smoke and substantial parts of the script are reliant on smoking, a decision was made to reluctantly move the production to England, where the characters could be filmed accurately. It was that or spend money on terrible looking CGI.

“Deep down I am sad it wasn’t possible to shoot in Wales,” Bryn said. “I still have hope of making films there eventually.”
