Every show will have consultants who work with the filmmakers to tell them how certain things work in real life. The Big Bang Theory hired dozens of high-ranking professors to make sure the science was accurate. There’s medicine that has ridiculously long names, and certain ones you can give to certain patients at certain times.
Medical dramas need to have actual doctors on set to watch over and let the writers know how hospitals work. Some procedures have to be shown with accuracy. Critics will blast a show if it is not accurate, and fans will do the same.
A good medical drama will leave a viewer thinking they can do the procedures that are on screen. I thought I could put in an IV after watching the ER pilot. ER is one of the most medically accurate dramas. It has been reviewed by medical professionals who have stated that the procedures and medical jargon are very accurate to how hospitals work. Scrubs, a sitcom, has been viewed as the most accurate show of hospital life and hierarchy between the doctors and nurses despite being a comedy.
One of the most inaccurate shows is a fan favourite, Grey’s Anatomy.
The portrayal of certain surgeries, medical care, and the lives of interns has been reviewed by doctors to be highly inaccurate. The fact that doctors on the show seem to do everything from examining the patients to doing the procedures and operations with no help at all is what makes it not realistic.
